Melbourne Cup 2026 Results: Point Of Law Wins as Ciaron Maher Trains Historic Trifecta
Point Of Law has won the 2026 Melbourne Cup at Flemington, giving trainer Ciaron Maher a historic first, with his stable filling all three placings in Australia’s most famous race.
Ridden by Ethan Brown, Point Of Law claimed the $10.2 million Group 1 contest over 3200 metres on Tuesday, 3 November, finishing 3¾ lengths ahead of stablemate Zahrann. Juja Kibo completed the trifecta, giving Maher the first clean sweep of the Melbourne Cup placings by a single trainer in the race’s 166-year history.
The victory was also significant for Point Of Law, a British-bred son of Frankel who arrived in Australia earlier this spring. After winning the Geelong Cup on his Australian debut, he completed the Melbourne Cup double at just his sixth career start.
Melbourne Cup 2026 Results and Placings
The Melbourne Cup attracted a field of 23 runners following the scratching of Asterix on race day.
Point Of Law settled behind the early pace before finishing strongly in the Flemington straight, securing his first Group 1 victory.
The first four finishers were:
| Position | Horse | Trainer | Jockey |
| 1st | Point Of Law | Ciaron Maher | Ethan Brown |
| 2nd | Zahrann | Ciaron Maher | Ben Melham |
| 3rd | Juja Kibo | Ciaron Maher | Sam Clipperton |
| 4th | Sons And Lovers | Joseph O’Brien | Dylan Browne McMonagle |
The race was run on a Soft 5 track, with Point Of Law recording a winning time of 3:21.88.
Royal Supremacy established a substantial lead during the race, opening a margin of approximately 15 lengths with 800 metres remaining. He maintained his advantage into the straight before the chasing runners closed the gap.
Point Of Law passed the leader in the final stages and drew clear to win comfortably.
Ciaron Maher Creates Melbourne Cup History
Maher entered the 2026 Melbourne Cup with seven runners, the largest representation of any trainer in the field.
His stable ultimately secured first, second and third, an achievement previously unmatched in Melbourne Cup history.
The result gave Maher his second Melbourne Cup victory, following Gold Trip’s success in 2022 when he trained in partnership with David Eustace.
His other runners also featured prominently in Tuesday’s race. Royal Supremacy finished fifth, Shockletz sixth, Middle Earth tenth and Mr Monaco seventeenth.
The result reflects the scale of Maher’s staying operation and the different preparations used to bring horses into Australia’s leading handicap race.
Point Of Law qualified through the Geelong Cup, while Juja Kibo secured his place after winning the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. Zahrann entered the Melbourne Cup following a preparation that included a second placing in the Caulfield Cup.
Three different lead-up campaigns ultimately produced the first three finishers at Flemington.
Point Of Law’s Journey From Britain to the Melbourne Cup
Point Of Law’s Melbourne Cup victory came just 206 days after his racing debut in Britain.
Originally trained by John and Thady Gosden, the colt began his career in April 2026, finishing second over approximately 2000 metres at Yarmouth.
He subsequently won a maiden at Newbury before finishing fourth in the Group 2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot.
His final British appearance came on 9 July, when he won the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy over 2615 metres at Newmarket.
Following that performance, Point Of Law was acquired from King Charles III and Queen Camilla for Australian racing interests and transferred to Maher’s stable.
He arrived in Australia during the spring and was prepared at the Werribee quarantine facility.
Despite originally being an emergency for the Caulfield Cup, he secured Melbourne Cup qualification through victory in the Group 3 Geelong Cup on 21 October.
That win guaranteed his place in the Flemington field and provided his first Australian racing success.
Less than two weeks later, he added the Melbourne Cup.
The Frankel Pedigree Behind Point Of Law
Point Of Law is by Frankel out of Portfolio, a daughter of Japanese champion sire Deep Impact.
Frankel retired undefeated after 14 starts, including ten Group 1 victories, and has subsequently established himself as an internationally successful stallion.
His progeny have won major races across a range of distances, including leading middle-distance and staying events.
Point Of Law’s dam, Portfolio, introduces another influential bloodline through Deep Impact, whose descendants have achieved considerable success in Japan and internationally.
The Frankel and Deep Impact combination brings together two significant modern thoroughbred breeding influences.
Point Of Law’s Melbourne Cup victory adds a major Australian staying achievement to that pedigree.
It also marks an important development in the colt’s racing record, with his first Group 1 success coming over 3200 metres after previous wins at shorter distances.
A Geelong Cup Preparation That Led to Flemington Success
Point Of Law’s Geelong Cup victory was a significant part of his Australian preparation.
The 2400-metre race has provided a pathway to Melbourne Cup success for several international stayers.
Media Puzzle completed the double in 2002, followed by Americain in 2010 and Dunaden in 2011.
Point Of Law now joins that group.
His Geelong Cup victory came at his fifth career start, making him one of the least experienced horses to contest the Melbourne Cup.
By winning at his sixth start, he became the most lightly raced Melbourne Cup winner since the race began attracting international competitors in 1993.
The result demonstrates how quickly his racing career has progressed, from a British maiden victory in May to a Melbourne Cup success in November.
For his Australian owners, the result also represents a significant outcome from acquiring an emerging European stayer and preparing him for a major Australian racing target.
Ethan Brown Claims His First Melbourne Cup Victory
The result delivered Ethan Brown his first Melbourne Cup win.
Brown partnered Point Of Law in both the Geelong Cup and Melbourne Cup, maintaining the association throughout the colt’s Australian campaign.
His victory at Flemington came three years after a serious race fall at the same venue interrupted his riding career.
Brown’s Melbourne Cup success adds another milestone to his return to top-level racing.
It also continues his association with Maher, whose stable has provided him with opportunities throughout his career.
Melbourne Cup Carnival Continues at Flemington
The Melbourne Cup was the second meeting of the 2026 Melbourne Cup Carnival, following Victoria Derby Day on Saturday, 31 October.
The Carnival continues with Crown Oaks Day on Thursday, 5 November, before concluding with Champions Stakes Day on Saturday, 7 November.
Point Of Law’s victory, Maher’s historic trifecta and the results of the other major spring races now form part of the completed 2026 Carnival record.
